Happy hour and safety tips for bar owners
Happy hours promotions reach far and wide. About every restaurant and bar has one. If your a business owner considering a new happy hour special, or even a current franchisee about to partake in the old corporate standard, I would like to offer a few bits of advice. Just because everyone's doing something a certain way, doesnt mean you should follow suit. There are simple ways to improve the safety of your promotion while still increasing business.
Lets consider the typical happy hour promotion. I'll presume the main objective is to make more money and that getting people too drunk is not. Logical yes? Sometimes it helps to make things clear. Most bars adhere to the rule that happy hour is during the less busy hours. Promote business when it's slow and raise prices when it's slammin. This makes complete sense from a financial standpoint and even makes sense for the consumer. The making money logic of any happy hour is pretty simple, but there is a common pitfall that some bar owners and even large corporate franchises make.
Offering a 2 for 1 special is a mistake. Instead, opt for a half price or reduced cost special. Putting extra alcohol in front of the guest increases their chance for drinking beyond their means. So if Bob wants to drink 3 drinks, do you think he will hand the free 4th drink back to the bartender? Yeah right. This goes for encouraging larger orders in any manner.
Another tip is to constantly train your bartenders. Many bartendersand waiters, especially high volume ones, get in a groove of serving and moving on to the next customer without recognition of their actions. Stopping to assess the situation escapes their attention. I have been there myself. Were all human and mistakes happen. However, with frequent training your bartenders will become more effective at their skill. Repitition in training is essential for safe service.
So train often and never offer 2 for 1 happy hour promotions and you'll run a safer establishment while making more dough!

Wine to Water is helping get clean water to those in need.
I learned of a great new charity that was started by a bartender. They help people in the world that don't have access to safe drinking water. Check them out if you get the chance at www.WinetoWater.org. They have free downloads available on their site that you can use to plan your own wine to water fundraising party.

Twilight stars Taylor Laughtner and Kristen Stewart walk the red carpet in Knoxville
I have been asked by so many people what it was like behind the scenes that I decided to write a quick blog post. BarBop provided the bar services for the Variety children's charity event at the movie premier of the Twilight saga - New Moon in Knoxville, TN.
Taylor Laughtner and Kristen Stewart were both there to walk the red carpet. People began to show around 1 in the afternoon. By sunset there was mob of eager fans waiting for the duo. When they finally arrived you could hear the crowd scream a mile away. Girls were going crazy.
Twilight fans lucky enough to get tickets got a huge treat. Being able to see, and for some meet, the stars of the movie may have been enough in it's self, but there was much more. For those over 21, BarBop served wonderful adult refreshments at no cost. Abuelo's was on hand serving delicious free Mexican food to everyone. Also, Regal entertainment group provided sodas and pop corn for everyone there. Many other vendors chipped in to make the event happen as well.
Variety hosts a movie premier every year. What better way than to have fun while helping to raise money for children who need it. If you ever get the chance to attend a movie premier in the future I highly suggest you do.

Holiday Party Safety Tips
Andy here with BarBop to mention a few tips on keeping your guests safe this year. The last thing any of us want are friends and family hitting the road after your party and ending up in jail, hurt, or maybe worse. With that in mind here are a few ideas.
1. Last Call Time
If your paying someone like BarBop you can have the last call set in advance of the parties scheduled end time. If doing the bar yourself, take a mental note and do a last call at a scheduled time. Whenever you do this, take all alcohol away from your bar area, and hide it. Otherwise a last call is not going to work well.
2. The Key Bucket
If your planning to have a lively event then asks guests to place their car keys in a basket that you will hold on to for safe keeping. This gives you a chance to see them before they leave.
3. Don't overserve
Ya Ya it's a no brainer. However, just concious pouring can eliminate many problems. I have seen supposed veteran bartenders who can not judge the amount of liquor in drinks they have poured for years. If your unsure use a jigger or measuring device. Also, beware aware of the alcohol content of each liquor you use.
4. Have a plan
Ok so you take some steps and one of your pals still drinks too much. It happens, but what's next? Try to have a, just incase plan. Designate someone that is not drinking to take people home or be sure to clean off that old air mattress in the closet.
Hopefully, this will help you plan your holiday event a little safer. For more holiday tips, recipes, and ideas, be sure to subscribe to the BarBop.com blog.
